What is Expressive Arts Therapy?

Expressive Arts Therapy is a holistic, creative approach to mental health and personal growth that uses the arts to support emotional well-being, self-expression, resilience, and healing. Rather than focusing on artistic skill or creating a finished product, expressive arts therapy invites individuals to engage in the creative process as a way of exploring thoughts, emotions, relationships, and life experiences. Every session is adapted to the individual's developmental level, interests, strengths, sensory preferences, and therapeutic goals.

Expressive arts therapy may include a combination of:

  • Visual art and painting

  • Drawing and collage

  • Music and sound

  • Creative writing and poetry

  • Storytelling

  • Movement and mindfulness

  • Play and imagination

  • Nature-based creative experiences

What Does a Session Look Like?

Together, therapist and client choose creative experiences that feel engaging, comfortable, and meaningful. Sessions may include one artistic modality or naturally weave together several forms of creative expression.

A session might involve creating artwork while processing emotions, using movement to explore regulation, combining storytelling with drawing, integrating music into reflective exercises, or engaging in imaginative play with younger children.

Clients are never expected to be "good at art." The focus is on the therapeutic process, not artistic performance.

Your Therapist

Expressive Arts Therapy services are provided by a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with specialized graduate training in expressive arts therapies.

Therapy integrates evidence-based counseling with creative modalities to help clients strengthen emotional regulation, increase self-awareness, build healthy coping skills, improve relationships, and support meaningful personal growth.

Getting Started

The therapeutic process begins with an initial assessment, where we take time to understand each client's strengths, interests, goals, and unique needs.

Together, we create an individualized plan that reflects what is most meaningful to the client and family. As therapy progresses, creative experiences are continually adapted to support growth, flexibility, confidence, and emotional well-being.

Whether through art, movement, music, storytelling, or imagination, expressive arts therapy offers a compassionate space where creativity becomes a pathway toward connection, healing, and lasting change.
